If you put these two models side by side, you can see that they have slightly different designs. Lowrance Elite 5 comes with a 5” high-res LED-backlit color display screen. On the left of the device is the Lowrance logo, whereas the control buttons are on the right side of the display screen. On the other hand, Lowrance HDS 5 is quite bigger and larger than Lowrance Elite 5. It also features a 5” display screen. The display screen is actually the brilliant SolarMax LCD panel that provides exceptional image and color quality. The color resolution of Lowrance HDS 5 is slightly higher than that of Lowrance Elite 5; the HDS 5 is 16-bit whereas the Elite 5 is just 8-bit. It has more onboard buttons, including a set of navigational buttons for easy and intuitive operation. From the looks alone, Lowrance Elite 5 may appear more classy and elegant, but Lowrance HDS 5 is more functional.
Of course, between the two, Lowrance Elite 5 is priced more economically. However, the lower price tag also means that it lacks some more advanced features, including communication features. Lowrance Elite 5 only has the potential for NMEA 0183 communication. On the other hand, Lowrance HDS 5 is coming with significantly more communication features, with NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000 for networking with external antennas, fuel flow sensors, and temp probes, as well as Ethernet for linking units using the Structure Scan and Sirius Radio. Worth a note, Lowrance Elite 5 also has lower sonar power and smaller internal memory than Lowrance HDS 5.
Lowrance Elite 5 is only equipped with the basemap mapping. On the other hand, Lowrance HDS 5 has the Insight mapping, which is incredibly handy and useful.

In general, Lowrance HDS 5 is more recommended. It has a better design and a better display screen. It is also much more feature-packed, including the Insight cartography mapping.
