Modem and Router
It is hard to imagine being inactive and stop using internet even for a day because we will lose so much interesting content and knowing what’s happening out there. Our life has become much simpler with the wide use of internet which is amazing because it is very useful to simplify lots of process that needs to be done manually and traditionally in the past. However, at home setting, most users are connecting to the internet for entertainment purpose while a small percentage is for productivity and learning activity.
There are indeed so much content on the internet that will leave you always entertained but to be connected, we need to pay for the service as well. Depending on your plan, the connectivity quality will mostly rely on their provider. These providers usually will rent their hardware as well to complete the setup at home but as the demand is increasing on reliable internet speed and overall quality, personal setup is also getting more common with your own choice.
The basic setup are modem and router that may come in a single unit or separately but they are actually different. They can be simply put apart by their function because the modem is the one connected to the internet while router is the one connecting you to the modem. In short, the latter is used to extend modem capabilities so then your device can connect to the internet no matter where it is thus, a router is also playing an important role in the overall internet connection quality in your house.
Router and Mesh Router
However, sometimes router can’t reach certain places as well despite you have been placing some on different spots and this is why we have what is called as Mesh Wi-Fi. This technology is fairly new and also known as Whole Home Wi-Fi system. What makes it different from our regular setup is that instead of forcing every device in the area to wirelessly connect to the same router, it is relying more on multiple Wifi nodes so, it is more effective against devices located spreading around the house.
A further explanation is we know one node which is designated by the primary router and is directly into the gateway connection while the other nodes act as satellites. Together, all of these nodes will act as a single seamless network so if you are for example in the TV room, your phone will be connected to the nearest Wi-Fi node and if you are in the patio, your laptop will also be connected to the nearest node. This is more effective in process and will provide a better performance.
About Linksys Velop and Amplifi HD
If you are also considering to upgrade the setup at home or directly using mesh system and skipping the more traditional modem and router setup, now is the time to see what the market has to offer because it seems there are more and more companies offering their own system while claiming to be the best option. In real life, not all are capable to hold into the promise and another factor you may want to keep in mind is many of them can be quite expensive.
However, if you are willing to pair a higher subscription with a mesh router at home, it will be a great upgrade, especially for those with high internet usage such as gaming and streaming on-demand content. Among those many options out there, Linksys and Ubiquiti will be two of the best brands to consider when looking for mesh router. They have some interesting offers and popular models that not only stylish but also performs well yet, are also considered expensive for many of us.
Linksys Velop and Amplifi HD from Ubiquiti are amazingly high performing mesh router with reliable performance and almost perfect in every aspect, but they are also not the best. Together with Orbi they are the most used and well-known mesh router currently selling in the market and while all of them sounds promising, we see a different reviews about each system which seems to favor Amplifi HD more. However, it is not a guarantee you will also experience the same issue.
Overall review and common problem we heard about Velop is that some of the router won’t connect to each other while strangely in some cases all devices refuse to connect to the rest of the router and only using one point only which makes the connection unreliable. Amplifi HD on the other hand also has some issues such as the device suddenly lose connectivity when roaming away from the router or the mesh point needs to be fairly closer to the router to work unless switched to 2.4Ghz.
Linksys Velop and Amplifi HD Design
In the past, modem and router are not something we want to put in a visible places but today they are made to be more fashionable or at least will not be a problem even though we decide to put it on top of cabinet and similar spots. This is what Linksys Velop and Amplifi HD are exactly offering because they are very pretty in terms of design. The former has this boxy, speaker like form with a simple matte white finish.
It sold in a set or you can add the router as needed but 1 or 3, they are equally expensive. The Amplifi HD is a little bit different because while it equally comes in 3 items per set, this one specify two of them as the mesh and another one as the router. The mesh points are kind of unique made from two parts connected with magnetic plug which makes it not ideal for just any spot in the house. Read also: Linksys Velop Vs Google WiFi.
Linksys Velop and Amplifi HD Setup
Moving further, let’s see how easy it is to setup Linksys Velop and Amplifi HD because it will be the first challenge when getting one of these routers. Thankfully, just like any mesh routers, both of them are relying heavily on smartphone app which simplify all the work and setup we need to do. Different users may take a different amount of time setting a full 3-piece of them but you don’t have to worry since the app is very user-friendly and will guide you step by step to complete the process.
Linkys will also help you finding the most ideal place to put the mesh point while Amplifi HD is very fast, the overall process probably took around 15 minutes in which the most part was used to update its firmware. Once the firmware is updated you can start putting the mesh router and plug them in, next thing you know they are connecting to the main router back automatically. The drawback is that they can only be tweaked using the app so if you are tech savvy, these two may not be the greatest choices.
Linksys Velop and Amplifi HD Performance
The next thing we want to talk about is their speed and performance because this is the most important point that will affect our decision when shopping for the router. Side by side both of them are very reliable but when tested, the Linksys Velop is showing a speed rate on 2.4GHz network at 56.57Mbps for download and 40.47Mbps for upload when tested in a 5 feet distance. In further distance or at 30 feet, the download is decreasing at 40.16Mbps and upload at 44.75Mbps.
Amplifi HD with the same 3-piece setup is performing better when tested because this one is quite amazing. On 2.4Ghz tested in a distance of 5 feet, the speed rate for upload is up to 177.99 Mbps with download at 196.22 Mbps and when bring to 30 feet, the download speed is still very much great at 146.29 Mbps or upload at 197.23 Mbps. The result stay similar on 5Ghz when tested from 3 feet away with Amplifi HD scores at 534.86 Mbps down compared to 238.07 Mbps from Linksys.
Linksys Velop vs Amplifi HD
Both of them are a good option if you want to try Whole Home Wi-Fi system and they are almost equally reliable as well as easy to use but, in practice it is shown that the Amplifi HD is actually working faster with a fairly far number against each other so it will give you more stable and of course faster internet connection. However, due to the design, placing its mesh router is a bit tricky for it has to be in a very stable surface.
As for the setup, both of them are centered on the app so it is very easy to use even for beginners as well as fast to process, but it can be a drawback for those who want to tweak the unit further.
